EML300B Mesh – initial test

My friend Mirek sent me from Czech Republic a few valves for testing, including a pair of precious EML300B Mesh valves. I managed to slot them into my system before departing for holidays. I only listened to them for a few hours, so these are only initial impressions.

I like the sound and was expecting the additional level of detail and sound of the mesh plate. Worth addition clearly. I wouldn’t say it’s a significant step improvement, just minor, subtle details are clearer. You won’t go wrong with the standard EML300B. The Mesh is a nice upgrade but you will need to think (as always) where it best to put the money on. I’d invest in the iron and overall circuit before you get to throw more money on the output valves. That’s my view.

Anyhow, great job Emission Labs for this superb valve.

300B SE Amplifier Finished!

When everything was going to plan…

This build became one of the quickest and eventually the most painful from all, perhaps not really. However, it was very challenging in the end. I will tell you why in more detail. Yet, it has been a fantastic learning experience.

300B SE Amp: build part VII (D3a driver)

It didn’t take long (or at least as long as I thought it would) to finish the driver board. It has a D3a hybrid mu-follower with SiC cathode bias arrangement:

Back at the beginning of the year I purchased a pair of Emission Labs 300B for my new amplifier version (still working on it). I own several 300Bs but was keen to try these out given their reputation.

6SF5 driver for 300B/GM70/813 SE Amps

Some years ago my friend Paolo brought up this lovely valve which looking at the curves seemed to be a great candidate for a driver which required large voltage swing. This indeed is needed for 300B, 211/GM70, 813 SE Amps. I build it and tested with the 300B, which is great.

The immediate challenge (and probably the reason why it hasn’t been used extensively in the past) is that has a high anode resistance as well as very low current capability. These 2 things are of course a killer for driving these demanding output valves. However, with a gyrator load and a follower stage, the reality is different

300B Amp: the journey starts here

I can’t get away from my big HT power supplies. This time the HT +400V for the 300B amp is here. Lots of Lundahl iron and a lovely hybrid bridge made of mercury rectifiers and damper valves. Yes, I’m in love with the blueish colour of the 816s. Despite they are mercury rectifiers, I know.

I promised the wife I’d get a smaller amp, that was my excuse for the 300B reference system. Still this is not going to be small, however, it will be compared to the 814 SE Amp!
