{"id":6489,"date":"2017-06-17T11:21:51","date_gmt":"2017-06-17T10:21:51","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.bartola.co.uk\/valves\/?p=6489"},"modified":"2017-07-08T07:53:33","modified_gmt":"2017-07-08T06:53:33","slug":"custom-transformer-for-discrete-dac","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.bartola.co.uk\/valves\/2017\/06\/17\/custom-transformer-for-discrete-dac\/","title":{"rendered":"Custom transformer for Discrete DAC"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Some 3 years ago I built the famous &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.bartola.co.uk\/valves\/2014\/08\/24\/starlight-cd-transport-and-discrete-dac-finished\/\">Starlight<\/a>&#8221; discrete DAC and CD transport, the DIY version from <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sonicillusions.co.uk\">Sonic Illusions<\/a>. &nbsp;This is, in my opinion, one of the best DACs I&#8217;ve every listened to.<\/p>\n<p>One of the disadvantages of the DAC output is the high (10k\u03a9) resistance and AC coupling requirement (unless you are prepared to balance DC, etc.) The traditional output configuration is an output capacitor feeding a step-down transformer to provide lower output impedance. The DAC can do only 1Vrms maximum due to the TTL output logic. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bartola.co.uk\/valves\/2014\/06\/28\/starlight-discrete-dac-a-learning-experience\/\">With a 4:1 output I had to date<\/a>, I wasn&#8217;t able to drive properly my <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bartola.co.uk\/valves\/2017\/03\/12\/vt-25-dht-preamplifer\/\">VT25\/10Y<\/a> preamp into the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bartola.co.uk\/valves\/2017\/02\/05\/4p1l-pse-amp-finished\/\">4P1L PSE amplifier<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>I decided to try a 1:1 output transformer but I had a clear challenge. The big primary inductance (Lp) needed demands a careful design and construction of the transformer to minimise the leakage capacitance and inductance which will impact the HF response. I asked Dorin for a minimum Lp of 200H, and Dorin sent me a first prototype of 307H. &nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>DvB used for this transformer the highest grade mumetal-permalloy available aiming for lowest THD under 200Hz\/2Vrms and finest magnet wire produced by Elektrisola. The HF rolls off about 26.5kHz. Ideally should aim closer to 30kHz, which is something we will look doing by reducing the primary inductance and therefore reducing the leakage impedances from both primary and secondary windings.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>How does it sound?<\/h2>\n<p>I have these transformers running for a couple of weeks now. The sound of the DAC is very clear and detailed. I have now the gain needed in my system, so I can drive effectively the amp. These are a pair of amazing handcrafted transformers.
